Everything went well with Alyson getting her foot poked yesterday for blood work. She barely even cried. She cried when they first poked her, but was fine after that.
We have had a rough time at night this week. She wakes up screaming and crying for hours at a time. Sunday night it was almost non-stop from 11PM-4AM, Monday night it was from 1:30AM-3AM, and last night it was from 1AM-2:15AM. She cries and cries, then sometimes passes gas and is better for a few minutes before it all starts over again. She hasn't been sleeping well and doesn't ever seem to fall in a deep sleep...when we put her down in her bed, she's awake in no time crying. Picking her up doesn't calm her...it usually takes a while before she calms down. She does better when I end up falling asleep while trying to console her and we end up sleeping on the couch. I'm not sure when the last time is I slept in my own bed. :( At least I'm getting rest though!! Justin has noticed she draws her legs up while holding her and just seems restless. We felt all the signs were pointing to her stomach bothering her. So I called the doctor's office yesterday to ask him if there is anything we can do to help her. The nurse called me back saying the doctor wanted to see her this morning.
Today's visit went well. Alyson gained 9 ounces since her visit last week. This time she weighed 9 pounds 2 .5 ounces. She should be gaining an ounce a day according to her doctor so she's continuing to eat well!! Her doctor thinks she has mild reflux...which is similar to heartburn. He said the classic signs are what we're describing - crying at night and when lying flat, which makes sense because it does the same in adults. It does not always cause spitting up...which she doesn't do a lot of. He said usually babies outgrow it...so we are hopeful that will happen for her. The doctor ended up prescribing Zantac for her. He said it may take a couple days to start working though and we should notice a difference by Saturday. I'm supposed to call him back on Monday to let him know how the medicine is working. If it doesn't help much, we will then do tests to look at reflux. He said it's similar to an upper GI. So prayers that the medicine works would be appreciated!! The great news is he said he doesn't feel this is colic. He said she's still young for that and the symptoms are not quite right for colic.
We are glad to know what the problem is now and comforted knowing we are working on the solution. It's so hard knowing something's wrong, but having no clue what it is or how to fix it. At least we are taking a step in the right direction!!
